The Miraculous Image of Saint George “Disourit”

This miraculous icon of Saint George “Disourit” dates back to the 9th century.

During the period of iconoclasm, it was kept in Constantinople. Saracen soldiers attempted to destroy it and threw it into the fire. But by divine power, the image remained completely unharmed.

One of the attackers, blinded by rage, then struck the icon in the saint’s throat with a knife. Blood flowed from the wound as if from a living person — a sign that is still visible today.

After this second shocking miracle, they threw the icon into the sea. Yet again, by God’s grace, it remained intact and was miraculously found on the shore near the Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos.

In fact, at the very spot where the icon was discovered, blessed water (an ayazmo) still flows to this day. This water is especially helpful for people with kidney diseases, which is why Saint George received the name “Disourit” (from Greek, referring to ailments of the urinary system).

The icon was found by Saint Xenophon himself, who later built the monastery in honor and memory of Saint George the Great Martyr and Victory-Bearer.
