The Miraculous Icon of Saint George “Dissuritis” (exact copy)
This miraculous icon of Saint George “Dissuritis” dates back to the 9th century.
During the period of iconoclasm, it was kept in Constantinople. Saracen soldiers attempted to destroy it and threw it into the fire. But by divine power, the image remained completely unharmed.
Then one of the attackers, blinded by fury, struck the icon with a knife in the throat of the saint. Blood flowed from the wound as if from a living person — a sign that is still visible today.
After this second shocking miracle, they threw the icon into the sea. But once again, God’s grace preserved it, and it was miraculously found on the shore near the Xenophont Monastery on Mount Athos.
In fact, at the very place where the icon was discovered, holy water (an ayazmo) still springs to this day. This water is especially helpful for people with kidney diseases, which is why Saint George came to be known as “Dissuritis” (from Greek, related to ailments of the urinary system).
The icon was found by Saint Xenophont himself, who later built the monastery in honor and memory of the Holy Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer.
