The Most Holy Theotokos “Gerontissa” – Abbess

The icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Gerontissa” is kept in the Holy Pantokrator Monastery on Mount Athos and is the central icon of the monastery. This icon has a long history; tradition tells that it was a gift to the monastery from the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.

“Gerontissa” performs many miracles, which is why sick people turn to Her with faith and hope. She grants children to barren women, health to those suffering from cancer, enlightenment to students, and guidance for various human needs. As the Swift-Responder, She provides immediate solutions, guides the faithful, and becomes an advisor in their lives. Gerontissa offers special mercy and blessing for the growth and accomplishment of any kind of work; numerous devout pilgrims testify that after seeing the icon of Gerontissa, their work prospered and advanced.

Her visage is gentle, pleasing, and full of mercy, leaving every worshipper with a sense of joy, inspiration, celebration, hope, comfort, and compassion, showing that the needs of Her children are of utmost importance to Her and that She always helps the faithful.
